Deep Dive

Deep Dive begins and ends with the same three minutes: the final of the men’s 4×100 metres freestyle relay at the Sydney Olympics, 16 September 2000. The United States has never lost this race at an Olympics, but Australia wins it by two tenths of a second. Gary Hall Jr. shakes Ian Thorpe’s hand. Michael Klim plays air guitar. Seventeen thousand people make a temporary grandstand shake so hard that the tiles crack.

Between those bookends, the series travels across the two decades before the race and the quarter-century after it, to understand what it means to be built for a single extraordinary moment — and what happens when that moment is over. It is one of the great stories of sporting rivalry between the United States and Australia, but underneath it is a story about fame, identity, masculinity, friendship and mentors, fathers and sons, and the long road back to purpose.

A man sitting on a black sofa, resting his head on his hand, staring pensively into the distance in a dimly lit modern interior with blue-toned walls and large windows.
